Looking for a permanent, loving home...

The cats on this page are all being cared for in our foster homes around the Greater Portland area while they wait to be adopted. Many of these cats are recent mothers whose litters have all grown and been adopted and now they are looking for their forever homes; some weren't happy in the shelter environment and preferred a quieter place to spend their days; and others just needed attention and TLC. Cats in foster care are generally faster to adapt to their adopted home because they have been living in a home environment.  All of these cats are healthy and awaiting your visit, so contact the shelter (207-829-4116; email: info@hartofme.com) to make an appointment!

Callie is an extremely sweet and affectionate kitty who came to the shelter about three weeks ago. She was discovered living outside at Pineland, and was brought to us by a caring person. The vet estimates her to be about 2-3 years old. Callie got sick with a bad cold and was taken into foster care to help recover. Unfortunately, she was discovered to be pregnant and delivered five very premature kittens who did not survive. Poor Callie was sad, but has gotten much better with lots TLC from her foster mom. Callie is now free of her cold and is going to be spayed this week. This kitty loves to snuggle right on the bed with you and rolls around for belly rubs and head scratches. Callie is used to living with other kitties and is a very laid back girl. She has huge yellow eyes and such pretty dilute calico markings. Please call soon to meet this nice kitty.

Vache and Vizzi - Young females
These two striking girls are about 6 months old and are the last of their litter mates waiting for a forever home. They were found living outside on their own. Vizzi is the gray and white kitten with gorgeous silvery undertones to her coat. These two formerly shy sisters have opened up so much in the past couple of months. Vache , who, is black and white, is a real lovebug who loves to be held and snuggled. She has a tendency to flop a bit like a ragdoll in your lap and purrs constantly while gazing lovingly at you with those amber eyes. Vizzi is more reserved and is likely to snuggle on your outstretched legs or to lean up against you when she's ready, and also has a habit of flopping down and purring when you reach out to her for petting. Both of them are very playful, athletic and sweet, and love cuddling up together and would probably do best in a quiet home without small children or other animals but plenty of love and attention. Adopt a Senior!
If you're looking to adopt a cat, why not consider adopting an older cat? Senior cats have several positive qualities that a younger kitten might have yet to develop. According to the Humane Society, qualities that make senior animals excellent companions include:

• Older animals already know the ropes. Many are patient and wise, making it easier to assimilate them into a new home.
• Mature animals often give you some time to yourself, as their physical demands are not as high.
• Older animals can learn quickly.  Their ability to focus can be leaps and bounds ahead of impetuous kittens.

So, take a look at some of our "veterans" and see if there's one meant for you.
