Often Overlooked - but not Forgotten...

The cats on this page are seeking a quieter lifestyle where patience, understanding and extra TLC are the KEY ingredients needed from their adoptive family. These cats deserve a home, but may never be lap cats. In fact it may take months before they come out from under the bed or from behind the desk. They would, however, make great companion kitties to an existing feline in the home and the reward of having a once very shy kitty blossom into a cat who learns to trust and love their new owner is unparalleled by any other kind of good feeling. Click the link below to read about the experience one of our volunteers is having with Charlene, one of our shyer kitties in foster care.

Charlene's Story

Sneakers - Adult male
Sneakers is a very striking cat with his long black hair, big yellow eyes, and one white whisker! Sneakers is a bit of a loner, and not the first kitty you will notice in his room. He will come to you eventually with some patience, and needs a calm  and gentle touch. Sneakers has been with us for awhile now, and truly deserves a second chance to find a home... won't that be yours?

Bosco- Adult male
Bosco is a handsome adult boy who has been with us a for a few years. He is reserved and would needs lots of TLC and patience to adjust to a new home. Bosco is a gentle boy who gets along well with other cats, but would need a home free of dogs and young children. Please call to meet this striking kitty, and open your heart to a deserving guy.

Dusty- Adult female
Dusty is a pretty gray kitty with soft medium to long hair and big golden eyes. She was found with her three kittens as strays, and her babies have now found their new homes but mom is still waiting. She is active and playful. Dusty would do best in a home without doggies, but is adjusting to life on the inside slowly, but surely. She enjoys a soft pet and gentle scratch, and will quietly observe you from afar before coming over to greet you. She is a nice girl who deserves a loving home. Please call to meet our delightful Dusty!

Abraham- Adult male
Abraham is a nice adult male cat who was rescued from a barn by one of our devoted volunteers. He is a very handsome boy with a touch of white on him, and big double paws. He is melding well at the shelter with other cats in his room, and is quite frisky. Abraham will make a great companion kitty for one of your own felines, so please consider this nice boy.

Astoria- Adult femlae
Astoria is a beautiful patch tabby girl with very pretty markings and a shy nature. She was a stray who was rescued and brought to our shelter recently. Astoria is beautiful with her unique coloring and golden eyes, and needs a very loving and calm environment to call her new home. With the right human to give her plenty of TLC, we know Astoria can blossom. Please be the one to give her this chance!

Birdie- Adult  female
Birdie is so named for the way she was discovered. She arrived at he shelter the day before a huge yard sale...although no one realized it at first. A beautiful wicker bird cage was left at our shelter door, and when a volunteer went to move it to the sale area, this beautiful, but scared little girl was discovered! Birdie is simply gorgeous with her big yellow eyes and soft and silky medium to long haired coat. She is understandably a bit nervous in her surroundings, but enjoys your attention and pets. Birdie needs a patient person willing to make her feel safe and loved, but will make you a loyal companion for life!

Florence- Adult female
Florence is a three and a half year old stray who has had a rough start. She has such pretty coloring and is oh-so happy to have a warm bed and plenty of food! Flo is a quiet gal and would love to come and sit by your side. Please take a look at this lovely lithe lady! She needs to a bit of time to relax and get used to you, but is ready for her forever home. One that will give her plenty of time to adjust and truly become part of the family!

Boomerang- Adult male
This handsome guy is Boomerang and he is a short hair tiger on white, male. He is quite bonded with Florence so if you were thinking of a pair of kitties that really deserve some love and patience these could be your two! They both are about two years old.

Little One- Adult female
Little One is a pretty tortoiseshell girl who arrived at the shelter from her owner's home where there were just too many kitties for him to care for. She is timid right now at the shelter, and will need a gentle hand and lots of patience to adjust to a new home. But look at those big round eyes that are just begging for you to care! Won't you please give her a chance?

Cassidy- Adult female
Cassidy is a lovely long hair calico lay who arrived at the shelter last summer. She was rescued from an over-crowded living situation in New Hampshire with her one surviving kitten. Cassidy needs some one-on-one attention in order to blossom into a friendly and social girl. She is very frightened of people, and shelter life is not her cup of tea. She has made slow but steady progress with the TLC from our volunteers, but Cassidy still remains timid of others. Please consider giving this lovely lady the love and patience which she deserves to finally feel safe and loved again.

Apple- Adult female
What a striking pose our sweet Apple has chosen! This beautiful "cow kitty" arrived a year ago, scared and shy. She has blossomed very nicely, but still needs a home with lots of patience and TLC to allow her to adjust to a new situation, and contiune her progress. Perhaps a home with another kitty as a companion, and older children. Please come to meet this nice young lady.

Angel - Young adult female
Angel is a young black kitty who was brought to the shelter last spring with her litter of kittens. She was a great momma, nurturing her babies until they were old enough to be adopted. Angel is a very timid girl who is not very comfortable around humans. She loves and has bonded with some of the other kitties she lives with, but is mostly scared. She would do well in a home with another young cat and lots of TLC and patience. Please open your heart to this special kitty.

Cognac- Adult female
Cognac is a pretty young momma whose kittens have all found their new homes. She was discovered living outside and is rather timid right now. She is beginning to learn to trust humans, and gets along well with other kitties. This girl will need lots of TLC to adjust to her new home environment, but she definitely deserves the chance!

Ashley- Adult female
She is a beautiful gray tabby with long hair. She isn't all that excited about people being too close to her. She runs away quite quickly if you look at her or make a move like you might want to touch her. Ashley came to us from a colony in Saco and is estimated to be about 8 years old.

Fluffy- Senior female
Fluffy arrived at HART from New York as a stray in 2002. She is black long hair very fluffy petite cat. She is an older girl, perhaps about 15 years old. Some of our volunteers call her the "Hisser" but they can pet her a little bit. Fluffy just wants to let you know she is not entirely delighted by the prospect of you getting too close! She is a gorgeous girl who has spent a long time in the shelter, and deserves a home soon.

Spice- Adult female
Spice is momma cat that has raised her 6 babies and is now wondering if you will find it in your heart to give her a permanent home. She was found living outside and is still quite timid. Spice would need time to relax and become comfortable with you, and lots of patience and encouragement as she learns to trust you. She is a very pretty orange tabby lady who just wants a warm bed to snuggle up on. Please call if you think she might be right for your quiet home.

Fred- Senior male
Our Fred is a tiny short hair black senior. He is missing an eye due to an ulcerated lesion a few years back and is almost completely deaf now. This older gentleman is a sweet heart.  He is a bit unsure initially when you pick him up but then cuddles into your arms. This is probably because he is afraid, but you can pretend otherwise. He was part of a trio of Rocky and Tyler that came from New York many years ago, but they have passed on now and only he remains. Fred will run when you approach but you can handle him easily. Please consider opening your heart and home to this deserving older boy who longs for a real family to love him.

Morgan- Adult male
This handsome boy is a big gray and white tuxedo guy who is about 5 years old. He is really quite shy and is not very interested in any human contact at present. He has lived with other cats and dogs, and is really very happy having little or no human interaction. this guy would do best in a home as a companion to another kitty as he is quite playful and loves to lounge snuggled up with another kitty.

Pumpkin- Adult female
This is a very tiny orange tabby is Pumpkin who has some chronic eye issues as her tear ducts don't drain. She came in with her sister Bailey who has since passed away.. Little Pumpkin is quite reserved and hesitant, but you can handle her if necessary. She would probably do fine in a home with someone to pay attention to just her. She would do best in a quiet home definitely with no kids, dogs or loud noises to spook her.

Kiernan- Senior male
This handsome guy came to us from New York also in 2002. He is skittish but some days you can approach him. Kiernan has a history of cancer on his feet so his care givers will want to look at them closely. He looks like a wise old man.

Cinder- Adult female
Cinder arrived here with us in March of 2006 with her 5 babies after being surrendered to the SPCA of Hancock County. She has not gained a lot of trust during her time here and is still quite skittish. She is a short hair all black female, who likes to blend in to her basket or hide under the table. Cinder would make a good companion kitty for another one in your home, and may blossom with a bit of love and patience.

Penelope- Adult female
Penelope: is a beautiful ten year old calico girl. She was an owner surrender to the vet in 2003. She was born in a home but started becoming very timid when she was only a kitten.. She now is very skittish and mostly unapproachable. She will run if you go in her direction. Peneolpe loves her pals Bosco, Sneakers and Charlie, and would be a great companion kitty to your existing kitty at home.

Charlie- Adult male
Charlie is a short hair black male. He is a good size kitty and you can touch him when he laying in one of the big kitty piles that he enjoys sleeping in! He likes a slow approach and soft words but we feel as though Charlie could come around pretty quickly if someone would take the time with him, and shower him with the love that he needs!

Princess- Adult female
Princess is a lovely patch tabby who arrived from the colony in Saco. We think she is around 8 years old. She came in as quiet and timid which hasn't changed much. You can approach Princess slowly and pet her but she might swat you after a bit. With patience and a gentle hand we feel Princess would truly blossom and flourish in a loving home.

Felicity- Adult female
This kitty arrived here as a 9 month old kitten from Compassion Where it Counts Cat Rescue and she is about 7 or 8years old. Felicity was from a hoarding situation.. She is a good size short hair black female who is very shy. She doesn't lash out at you, but will run away if you approach too quickly. Please consider this kitty as one who will keep your other kitty company, and deserves a home where TLC and patience is given to her.
